Road Closed Ahead sign

The road is closed ahead to all traffic or to all but local traffic.

What to do

Plan to take a different route or follow the detour.

Plan to turn off before the closure or follow the detour; only go further if signs say local traffic is allowed and that is you.

Where it's used

Section 6H.05 says the ROAD (STREET) CLOSED (W20-3) sign should be used in advance of the point where a road is closed to all traffic or to all but local traffic, and Section 2B.63 requires this advance warning before the white ROAD CLOSED sign. It is a black-on-orange diamond work zone sign. STREET may replace ROAD, and the distance line may read AHEAD, XX FEET or XX MILES.

Don't confuse it with

  • Road Closed: The white rectangular ROAD CLOSED sign marks the closure itself, while this orange diamond warns of it in advance.
  • Detour Ahead: DETOUR AHEAD warns that you will be routed onto another road, while ROAD CLOSED AHEAD warns that the road is shut.
  • Road Closed to Thru Traffic: ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC is a white regulatory sign that still allows local access.
