Road Work Ahead sign
General warning of road work, obstructions or restrictions ahead. Work-zone warning signs are black on orange.
What to do
Slow down, stay alert, watch for workers and equipment and follow the signs and flaggers.
Slow down, put the phone away and expect lane shifts, stopped traffic and workers in the road.
STREET may replace ROAD and a distance may replace AHEAD.
Where it's used
Section 6H.03 says the ROAD (STREET) WORK (W20-1) sign, a general warning of obstructions or restrictions, should be placed in advance of the work space or detour on the road where the work is taking place, and on crossroads or major driveways that lead into the zone. Like other temporary traffic control warning signs it is a diamond with black letters on orange. STREET may replace ROAD, and the bottom line may read AHEAD, XX FEET or XX MILES.
Don't confuse it with
- Road Work Next XX Miles: ROAD WORK NEXT XX MILES is a rectangular sign for long projects, while ROAD WORK AHEAD is the standard advance diamond.
- End Road Work: END ROAD WORK marks the end of the work zone.
- Workers: The Workers sign specifically warns that people are working in or near the road.
