Right (Left) Lane Closed Ahead sign
One or more through lanes of a multi-lane road are closed ahead.
What to do
Merge into an open lane early and smoothly, and follow the cones or arrow board.
Merge into the open lane early when it is safe, and take turns smoothly with other drivers at the taper.
Where it's used
Section 6H.07 requires a Lane(s) Closed sign in advance of the point where one or more through lanes of a multi-lane road are closed; for one lane it reads RIGHT (LEFT) LANE CLOSED (W20-5), and for several it reads XX RIGHT (LEFT) LANES CLOSED (W20-5a). It is a black-on-orange diamond work zone sign with a distance line of AHEAD, XX FEET or XX MILES. A different sign, Interior Lane Shift (W9-3), is used when a middle lane is closed.
Don't confuse it with
- Right (Left) Lane Ends: The yellow RIGHT LANE ENDS sign warns of a permanent lane drop, while this orange sign warns of a temporary closure.
- One Lane Road Ahead: ONE LANE ROAD means opposing traffic shares a single lane, not that one of your lanes is closed.
- Lane Ends: The yellow Lane Ends symbol sign is for permanent lane reductions.
