One Lane Road Ahead sign
Ahead, traffic in both directions must share a single lane, usually controlled by flaggers or a temporary signal.
What to do
Slow down and be ready to stop and wait your turn.
Be ready to stop and wait your turn, and follow the flagger, pilot car or signal rather than oncoming traffic.
Where it's used
Section 6H.06 says the ONE LANE ROAD (W20-4) sign may be used only in advance of a point where traffic in both directions has to use a single shared lane. It is a black-on-orange diamond work zone sign, with a distance line of AHEAD, XX FEET or XX MILES. The shared lane is normally controlled by flaggers, a pilot car or a temporary signal.
Don't confuse it with
- Right (Left) Lane Closed Ahead: LANE CLOSED AHEAD means one of several lanes going your way is closed, while ONE LANE ROAD means both directions share one lane.
- One Lane Bridge: The yellow ONE LANE BRIDGE sign warns of a permanent one-lane bridge, not temporary work.
- Flagger: The Flagger sign warns of the person controlling traffic, which often goes with a one-lane section.
