Workers sign
Workers are in or near the roadway.
What to do
Slow down, give workers room and be ready to stop.
Slow down, move away from the workers if you can do so safely, and stay ready to stop.
Where it's used
Section 6H.18 allows the Workers (W21-1) sign to warn of workers in or near the road, and says it should be used when workers are in the roadway and no other warning devices are in place. It is a black-on-orange diamond with a worker symbol; the WORKERS (W21-1a) word sign may be used instead. It may be paired with distance plaques or other work zone signs.
Don't confuse it with
- Flagger: The Flagger sign warns of a person who will direct traffic, while the Workers sign warns of people working near the road.
- Road Work Ahead: ROAD WORK AHEAD is the general warning of a work zone, while Workers specifically means people are close to traffic.
- Pedestrian Warning: The yellow Pedestrian Warning sign is about the public walking or crossing, not road workers.
