Divided Highway Crossing sign

Placed on side-street approaches to warn that the road ahead is a divided highway, where the crossing works as two separate intersections.

What to do

When turning left, cross the first roadway, then turn left into the far roadway; do not turn left into the near lanes, which carry traffic the other way.

When turning left, cross the near roadway first and turn into the far roadway, because the near lanes carry traffic coming from your left.

Where it's used

Section 2B.50 requires this regulatory sign on unsignalized minor-street approaches where left and right turns onto a divided highway are allowed at a crossing that works as two separate intersections, unless the highway carries under 400 vehicles a day with a limit of 25 mph or less. It goes on the near right corner, under the STOP or YIELD sign or on its own post. R6-3 is the four-leg version and R6-3a the T-intersection version; both are black-on-white horizontal rectangles showing the median layout.

Don't confuse it with

  • Divided Highway: The yellow Divided Highway diamond warns drivers on the highway itself that a median begins ahead, while this sign is for drivers about to cross or enter it.
  • Divided Highway Ends: Divided Highway Ends warns that a median ends and two-way traffic starts, not of a crossing.
  • Cross Road: The yellow Cross Road diamond warns of an intersection ahead, while this sign shows that the road you are entering is split by a median.

  • Either way
  • Left
Show answer

Right. The divided highway is two one-way roadways: at the first roadway you can only turn right, and at the second only left.
