Freeway Entrance sign
Marks a freeway or expressway entrance ramp near the crossroad, helping drivers avoid entering the wrong ramp.
What to do
Use this ramp to enter the freeway in the direction of travel.
Before turning onto a ramp, check for this sign and the route direction so you never enter an exit ramp the wrong way.
Where it's used
Section 2D.50 allows FREEWAY ENTRANCE (D13-3) signs, or the D13-3a version with a diagonal downward arrow, on entrance ramps near the crossroad to show drivers where to get on a freeway or expressway. The word FREEWAY may be replaced by EXPRESSWAY or PARKWAY, or the name of an unnumbered highway. It is a green horizontal guide sign (48 x 30 inches); a route assembly with a downward arrow may be used instead, and Section 2B.48 covers the wrong-way signs used at ramp ends.
Don't confuse it with
- Do Not Enter: DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY signs face drivers at the end of an exit ramp, while FREEWAY ENTRANCE marks the correct ramp to use.
- Exit Gore sign: The Exit Gore sign marks where to leave the freeway, not where to enter it.
- Interstate Route marker: The route marker shows which highway the ramp leads to; the entrance sign confirms it is the on-ramp.
