Exit Gore sign
Placed in the gore (the area where the ramp splits from the main road) to mark the exit point, with an upward diagonal arrow and an exit number where exits are numbered.
What to do
Leave the main roadway here if this is your exit. If you miss it, go on to the next exit; never back up or cut across the gore.
Be in the exit lane before you reach the gore; if you miss your exit, continue to the next one instead of crossing the gore or backing up.
Where it's used
Section 2E.26 requires an Exit Gore sign in the gore, the area between the main road and a ramp just past where it branches, for every ramp leaving a freeway, expressway or collector-distributor road. It shows EXIT (E5-1), or EXIT and the number (E5-1a) where exits are numbered, with a diagonally upward arrow at about the angle of departure, and must be on breakaway or yielding supports. A narrow version (E5-1c) is used in tight gores, and a Confirmation Advisory Speed (W13-1aP) plaque may be mounted with it.
Don't confuse it with
- Advisory Exit Speed: The yellow Exit Speed sign recommends a speed for the ramp, while the green Exit Gore sign marks where the exit splits off.
- Freeway Entrance: FREEWAY ENTRANCE marks a ramp onto the freeway, the opposite of an exit.
- One-Direction Large Arrow: The yellow Large Arrow shows a curve or turn, not an exit point.
