Keep Right Except to Pass sign
Used where there are two lanes in your direction to tell drivers to stay in the right lane except while passing.
What to do
Drive in the right lane; use the left lane only to pass, then move back right.
Cruise in the right lane, move left only to overtake, and return to the right once you have safely cleared the vehicle you passed.
Where it's used
Section 2B.38 allows this sign on roads with two lanes in one direction to tell drivers to stay in the right-hand lane except while passing. It should be installed at or just beyond the start of the two-lane section and at selected points where extra emphasis is needed. It is a vertical black-on-white regulatory word sign.
Don't confuse it with
- Slower Traffic Keep Right: SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT applies only to drivers slower than the flow, whereas KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS applies to everyone not overtaking.
- Keep Right: Keep Right (R4-7) is a symbol sign about passing to the right of an obstruction, not about lane choice.
- Pass With Care: PASS WITH CARE marks the end of a no-passing zone on a two-way road, while this sign is for multi-lane one-direction travel.
