Reduced School Speed Limit Ahead sign
A reduced school speed limit zone begins ahead.
What to do
Start slowing so you are within the school speed limit when you reach the zone.
Start slowing down now so you are at the school limit by the time you reach the school speed limit sign.
Where it's used
Section 7B.05 says the Reduced School Speed Limit Ahead (S4-5 or S4-5a) sign should be used where the school speed limit is more than 10 mph lower than the normal limit, or where advance notice is otherwise needed. It is a fluorescent yellow-green diamond (36 x 36 inches) with a white speed limit panel. It must be followed by a School Speed Limit sign or assembly showing exactly the same speed.
Don't confuse it with
- Reduced Speed Limit Ahead: The ordinary yellow version warns of a lower general speed limit, while this fluorescent yellow-green sign warns of a school speed zone.
- School Speed Limit When Flashing: The S5-1 marks where the school limit actually starts, while this sign gives advance warning.
