School sign
Warns that you are approaching a school area or marks the start of a designated school zone. With an AHEAD or distance plaque it warns of a school crossing ahead. The five-sided shape is reserved for school signs.
What to do
Slow down, watch for children and school buses, and obey any school speed limit.
Slow down, watch for children and buses, and look for school speed limit signs or flashing beacons just beyond it.
The pentagon has squared bottom corners (Table 2A-1).
Where it's used
Section 7B.02 gives the School (S1-1) sign four uses: warning of a school area, marking the start of a legally designated school zone (where it is required), and, with an AHEAD/distance or diagonal arrow plaque, warning of or marking a school crossing. It is a five-sided pentagon (36 x 36 inches on conventional roads) with black children symbols on fluorescent yellow-green, the colour required for school warning signs. Plaques used with it include SCHOOL (S4-3P), ALL YEAR (S4-7P), turn arrows and higher-fines plaques, and Section 7B.05 requires one before the first school speed limit sign.
Don't confuse it with
- School Crossing assembly: The School Crossing assembly is this sign plus a downward arrow plaque, marking the crosswalk itself.
- Pedestrian Warning: The Pedestrian Warning sign is a diamond with one walking figure, not a pentagon with two children.
- Playground: The Playground sign is a diamond warning of a playground, not a school.
