School Crossing assembly sign
A School sign with a downward-pointing arrow plaque marks the exact place where schoolchildren cross the road.
What to do
Slow down and be prepared to stop for children and crossing guards at the crosswalk.
Slow down, be ready to stop for children and obey any crossing guard's signals at the crosswalk.
Where it's used
Section 7B.03 makes the School Crossing assembly a School (S1-1) sign with a diagonal downward arrow (W16-7P) plaque, installed at or as close as possible to the school crossing; it is used only at crossings next to schools or on established school walking routes. It must be preceded by a School Advance Crossing assembly (the S1-1 with an AHEAD or XX FEET plaque) unless a School Zone sign is already in advance. It is generally not used on approaches with a STOP or YIELD sign, and in-street school crossing signs or Yield Here To School Crossing signs may supplement it.
Don't confuse it with
- School: The School sign alone warns of a school area or zone, while the version with an arrow plaque marks the actual crossing.
- Pedestrian Warning: The Pedestrian Warning diamond marks general pedestrian crossings, not school crossings.
- Crosswalk Markings: The crosswalk is the pavement marking; this sign assembly points to where it is.
