Reduced Speed Limit Ahead sign

A lower speed limit begins ahead, typically used where the limit drops by more than 10 mph. It must be followed by a Speed Limit sign.

What to do

Begin slowing so you are at or below the new limit when you reach the Speed Limit sign.

Begin slowing when you see it so that you are already at the new limit when you pass the Speed Limit sign.

Where it's used

Section 2C.40 says a Reduced Speed Limit Ahead (W3-5 or word version W3-5a) sign should be used where the speed limit drops by more than 10 mph, or where advance notice is needed. It is a yellow diamond containing a white speed limit panel, and the number shown must match the Speed Limit (R2-1) sign that must follow at the start of the lower zone. Related signs are the VARIABLE SPEED ZONE AHEAD (W3-5b) and Truck Speed Zone Ahead (W3-5c).

Don't confuse it with

  • Speed Limit: The white Speed Limit sign is where the new limit actually begins; this yellow sign warns that it is coming.
  • Advisory Speed plaque: The Advisory Speed plaque gives a recommended speed for a hazard, while this sign announces a new legal limit ahead.
  • Reduced School Speed Limit Ahead: The school version warns of a lower school-zone limit and is fluorescent yellow-green.
