Road Closed sign
The road is closed to all traffic except contractors' equipment or officially authorized vehicles. It is usually placed on or above a barricade in the road.
What to do
Do not drive past this sign; follow the detour signs.
Never drive around the barricade; turn back or follow the posted detour route.
Work-zone use: Section 6G.04.
Where it's used
Section 2B.63 says ROAD CLOSED (R11-2) should be used where a road is closed to all traffic except authorized vehicles, and Section 6G.04 adds that in work zones it normally sits at or near the centre of the road on or above a Type 3 barricade. It is a 48 x 30 inch horizontal black-on-white rectangle and must be preceded by an advance ROAD CLOSED AHEAD warning sign and, where needed, a DETOUR AHEAD sign. STREET CLOSED, BRIDGE OUT and PATH CLOSED versions exist, and an EXCEPT BICYCLES plaque may be added where bicycles can still get through.
Don't confuse it with
- Road Closed to Thru Traffic: ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC still lets local traffic drive up to the closure, while ROAD CLOSED means no one but authorized vehicles may go past.
- Road Closed Ahead: ROAD CLOSED AHEAD is an orange warning sign placed in advance, while the white ROAD CLOSED sign marks the closure itself.
- Detour: The DETOUR sign shows the route to follow around the closure, while ROAD CLOSED marks the point you may not pass.
