Crosswalk Markings sign

White lines (transverse lines, longitudinal bars or a ladder pattern) marking a pedestrian crossing. At non-intersection locations the markings legally create the crosswalk.

What to do

Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks as your state's law requires and stop before the crosswalk.

Stop before the crosswalk, not in it, and look for pedestrians stepping off the curb, including at unmarked corners.

Crosswalk patterns: Sections 3C.03 to 3C.08.

Where it's used

Section 3C.01 says crosswalk markings guide pedestrians across roads and help alert drivers at crossings, and at non-intersection locations they legally create the crosswalk. Section 3C.03 requires them to be white, either two transverse lines 6 to 24 inches wide or high-visibility patterns such as longitudinal bars, ladder or bar pairs. They should be installed at signalized locations, and an engineering study should be done before marking a crossing at an uncontrolled approach.

Don't confuse it with

  • Stop Line: The stop line is where vehicles stop, while the crosswalk is where pedestrians walk.
  • Yield Line: A yield line of triangles tells drivers where to yield before a crosswalk.
  • Pedestrian Warning: The Pedestrian Warning sign alerts drivers to the crossing, while the markings show its exact path.
