Yield Line sign
A row of solid white triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles, showing where to yield; used only with a YIELD or Yield Here to Pedestrians type sign.
What to do
If you must yield, stop behind the triangles.
If pedestrians or cross traffic are present, stop behind the triangles, which leaves room for other drivers to see people in the crosswalk.
Where it's used
Section 3B.19 says a yield line must be a row of solid white isosceles triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles, across the approach lanes, and may only be used with a YIELD sign, a Yield Here to Pedestrians sign or another device that requires yielding, never where a stop is required. The triangles should have a 12 to 24 inch base, a height 1.5 times the base and gaps of 3 to 12 inches. At a crosswalk on an uncontrolled multi-lane approach, a yield line must be used with Yield Here to Pedestrians signs and should be 20 to 50 feet before the crosswalk.
Don't confuse it with
- Stop Line: A stop line is a solid bar where you must stop; a yield line of triangles is where you stop only if you need to yield.
- Yield Here to Pedestrians: The YIELD HERE TO PEDESTRIANS sign is the sign that goes with these markings before a midblock crosswalk.
- Crosswalk Markings: The crosswalk is where people walk, often well beyond the yield line.
