Broken White Lane Line sign

Separates lanes going the same direction; changing lanes with care is permitted.

What to do

Signal, check mirrors and blind spot, then change lanes when safe.

Before crossing it, signal, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder for vehicles in your blind spot.

Where it's used

Section 3B.06 says lane lines between lanes going the same direction must be white, and where crossing with care is allowed the lane line is a normal-width broken white line. Lane lines are required on all freeways and Interstates and should be used wherever a road has two or more lanes in the same direction. Solid or double solid white lines replace it where lane changes are discouraged or prohibited.

Don't confuse it with

  • Broken Yellow Center Line: A broken yellow line separates opposing traffic, while a broken white line separates lanes going your way.
  • Solid White Lane Line: A solid white line discourages lane changes, while a broken one allows them with care.
