Double Solid White Line sign

Separates lanes going the same direction where crossing is prohibited.

What to do

Do not cross it to change lanes.

Treat it like a barrier: stay in your lane until the double line ends and you are allowed to change lanes.

Where it's used

Section 3B.06 requires a double solid white lane line where crossing between lanes in the same direction is prohibited. It is often used with a STAY IN LANE sign (Section 2B.40) and, in wide or double form, to separate preferential lanes or form channelizing islands at ramps. Figure 3B-8 shows a typical use.

Don't confuse it with

  • Solid White Lane Line: A single solid white line discourages lane changes, while a double solid white line prohibits them.
  • Double Solid Yellow Center Line: Double yellow separates opposite directions, while double white separates lanes going the same way.
  • Stay in Lane: The STAY IN LANE sign is the sign version of the same rule and is usually paired with these lines.
