Solid White Lane Line sign
Separates lanes going the same direction where lane changes are discouraged, such as approaching intersections and turn lanes.
What to do
Avoid changing lanes across it.
Pick your lane before the solid line starts, especially near intersections, so you do not need to cross it.
Where it's used
Section 3B.06 says a normal-width solid white lane line is used where crossing between lanes in the same direction is discouraged. It should be used on intersection approaches to separate through lanes from mandatory turn lanes or turn lanes from each other, and at toll plazas, and may be used before crosswalks on multi-lane roads or to separate an added truck climbing lane. Wide solid lines may be used for extra emphasis.
Don't confuse it with
- Broken White Lane Line: A broken white line allows lane changes with care.
- Double Solid White Line: A double solid white line prohibits lane changes, while a single solid line only discourages them.
- White Edge Line (right edge): A white edge line marks the right edge of the roadway, not the boundary between two lanes.
