Two-Way Left-Turn Lane Markings sign
A center lane bordered on each side by a solid yellow line (toward traffic) and a broken yellow line (toward the center lane), usually with white two-way left-turn arrows.
What to do
Use the lane only to make or prepare for a left turn; do not travel or pass in it.
Enter the center lane only to turn left or to wait for a gap, and watch for drivers coming the other way who may be using it too.
Where it's used
Section 3B.05 requires a two-way left-turn lane that is never used as a reversible lane to be marked on each side with a normal-width broken yellow line toward the center lane and a solid yellow line toward the through lane. White two-way left-turn arrows should be placed at or just after the start of the lane. Section 2B.32 says Two-Way Left-Turn-Only signs (R3-9a or R3-9b) should be used with these markings.
Don't confuse it with
- Two-Way Left-Turn-Only (center lane): The CENTER LANE LEFT TURN ONLY sign is the sign that goes with these markings; the markings themselves are on the pavement.
- Reversible Lane Markings: A reversible lane has double broken yellow lines on both sides and carries through traffic in one direction at a time.
- Double Solid Yellow Center Line: Double solid yellow lines have no center lane between them and ban passing.
