Solid and Broken Yellow Lines (one-direction no-passing) sign

A solid and a broken yellow line side by side: drivers next to the broken line may pass with care; drivers next to the solid line may not.

What to do

Check which line is on your side. Pass only if the broken line is closest to you.

Look at the line nearest your car: if it is broken you may pass when safe, if it is solid you must not.

No-passing zone placement: Section 3B.03.

Where it's used

Section 3B.01 defines the one-direction no-passing zone marking on two-lane, two-way roads as a double yellow line made of one broken and one solid line. Traffic next to the broken line may cross it to pass with care, while traffic next to the solid line may not. Section 3B.03 places the solid line where passing sight distance in that direction is below the Table 3B-1 minimum, such as on the approach to a hill crest or curve.
