Double Solid Yellow Center Line sign

Two solid yellow lines separate opposing traffic and mean no passing in either direction. On undivided roads with four or more lanes, this is the required center line.

What to do

Never cross it to pass. Crossing to turn left into a driveway or side street is governed by state law.

Never cross double yellow lines to pass; stay to the right of them and wait for a broken line on your side.

Where it's used

Section 3B.01 says center lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions and must be yellow, and two normal-width solid yellow lines are the two-direction no-passing zone marking. On undivided two-way roads with four or more lanes always open to traffic, the double solid yellow line is the required center line unless there is a reversible or two-way left-turn lane. On two-lane roads, no-passing zones are marked where passing sight distance is shorter than the minimums in Table 3B-1, for example over hills and around curves.
