White Edge Line (right edge) sign

A solid white line marking the right-hand edge of the roadway.

What to do

Keep to the left of it; it helps you stay on the road at night and in bad weather.

At night or in fog, use the white edge line to keep your position, and look toward it instead of at oncoming headlights.

Where it's used

Section 3B.09 says right edge lines, if used, must be normal-width solid white lines marking the right edge of the roadway; they help guide drivers in bad weather and poor visibility, and widths of 6 inches or more can improve safety. Section 3B.10 requires them on freeways, expressways and busier rural arterials, and they are generally not carried through intersections except as dotted extensions.

Don't confuse it with

  • Yellow Left Edge Line: A yellow edge line marks the left edge of a one-way roadway, while the white edge line marks the right edge.
  • Solid White Lane Line: A solid white lane line separates two lanes, while an edge line marks the edge of the travel lanes.
