Pilot Car Follow Me sign

Mounted on a vehicle that leads one-way traffic through or around a work zone.

What to do

Follow the pilot car closely and do not pass it.

Wait until the flagger releases you, then follow the pilot car at its speed and do not pass it or stop along the way.

Where it's used

Section 6H.37 requires the PILOT CAR FOLLOW ME (G20-4) sign to be mounted where it is easy to see, on the top or rear of a vehicle that guides one-way traffic through or around a work zone. It is a horizontal black-on-orange rectangle. Pilot cars are usually used with flaggers at each end of a one-lane section (Section 6E.04).

Don't confuse it with

  • Flagger: The Flagger sign warns of a person directing traffic, while this sign is on the vehicle you are told to follow.
  • One Lane Road Ahead: ONE LANE ROAD AHEAD warns of the shared single lane that a pilot car often leads you through.
