Stay in Lane sign
On multi-lane highways, tells drivers to remain in their lane until conditions allow a lane change; it should be used with double solid white lane lines.
What to do
Do not change lanes while the restriction applies.
Pick your lane before the restriction begins and hold it until the markings change back to broken lines.
Where it's used
Section 2B.40 allows the STAY IN LANE sign on multi-lane highways to direct drivers to remain in their lane until conditions permit shifting to another. If used, it should be accompanied by double solid white lane lines that prohibit lane changing. It is a vertical black-on-white regulatory word sign.
Don't confuse it with
- Double Solid White Line: The double solid white line is the pavement marking that prohibits lane changes; the sign reinforces it from the roadside.
- Solid White Lane Line: A single solid white line discourages lane changing, while STAY IN LANE with double white lines prohibits it.
- Do Not Pass: DO NOT PASS is about overtaking on a two-way road, while STAY IN LANE is about changing lanes among same-direction lanes.
