Y-Intersection sign
The road splits into two branches ahead.
What to do
Slow down and choose the correct branch early.
Decide early which branch you need, signal, and watch for traffic coming out of the other branch.
Where it's used
Section 2C.41 allows the Y-Intersection (W2-5) sign in advance of a point where the road divides into two branches, to warn of the intersection and possible turning or entering traffic. It is a black-on-yellow diamond with a Y-shaped symbol. It should not be used on approaches controlled by STOP or YIELD signs or signals.
Don't confuse it with
- T-Intersection: T-Intersection means the road ends at a crossing road at right angles, while a Y means it forks into two angled branches.
- Side Road: Side Road shows a road joining while your road continues; a Y shows your road splitting.
- Divided Highway: Divided Highway shows the road splitting around a median and continuing in the same direction, not forking into two roads.
