Dead End sign

The road ends without connecting to another street.

What to do

Expect to turn around; there is no through route.

Do not enter unless your destination is on that street, since you will have to turn around at the end.

Where it's used

Section 2C.24 allows the DEAD END (W14-1) sign at the entrance to a single road that ends without meeting another street, posted at the entry or far enough ahead to turn off at the nearest cross street. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign. A horizontal DEAD END (W14-1a) version with an arrow may be mounted with a street name sign to show which way the cross street ends, and a ROAD ENDS XX FT sign may be used where the end is not obvious.

Don't confuse it with

  • No Outlet: NO OUTLET is used for a road or network of streets with no other way out, while DEAD END is for a single street that ends.
  • T-Intersection: At a T-intersection you can turn left or right; a dead end has no way through at all.
  • Road Closed: ROAD CLOSED marks a temporary closure, while DEAD END marks a road that permanently ends.
