Advisory Exit Speed sign

Shows the recommended speed for a freeway or expressway exit ramp. Required when the ramp speed is 20 mph or more below the mainline speed limit.

What to do

Slow down to the speed shown after you leave the main lanes and enter the exit.

Move into the deceleration lane first and then slow to the exit speed before the ramp curve, not on the main lanes.

Where it's used

Section 2C.12 requires the Advisory Exit Speed (W13-2) sign wherever an advisory speed is posted for a freeway or expressway exit, and makes it mandatory when the exit's advisory speed is 20 mph or more below the mainline speed limit (recommended at 15 mph). It should stand along the deceleration lane, where drivers can slow down before the curve. It is a vertical black-on-yellow rectangle reading EXIT XX MPH; a similar RAMP (W13-3) sign is used on conventional roads, and combination signs add a curve or truck-rollover symbol.

Don't confuse it with

  • Advisory Speed plaque: The Advisory Speed plaque is a square plaque under another warning sign, while the Exit Speed sign stands alone and applies only to the exit.
  • Speed Limit: A white Speed Limit sign is enforceable; the yellow exit speed is a recommendation for the ramp.
  • Exit Gore sign: The Exit Gore sign marks the split point of the exit, while the Exit Speed sign tells you how fast to take it.
