No Turn on Red sign

Required where turning on a red light (right turns, or left turns from one one-way street onto another) is prohibited.

What to do

Wait for a green signal before turning.

Stop and wait for a green indication before turning, and check for an hours plaque if the ban applies only at certain times.

A symbol version (R10-11a) is used where the approach has both circular red and red arrow indications.

Where it's used

Section 2B.60 requires a NO TURN ON RED sign wherever a right turn on circular red (or a left turn on red from one one-way street to another) is to be prohibited, and the symbolic R10-11a version where the approach has both circular red and red arrow indications. It should be installed near the signal head, and if a far-side sign is more than 120 feet past the stop line a duplicate must go on the near side. Reasons for using it include poor sight distance, an exclusive pedestrian phase, heavy pedestrian conflicts or repeated right-on-red crashes; time-of-day bans may use blank-out signs or an hours plaque.

Don't confuse it with

  • No Right Turn: No Right Turn bans the turn whatever the signal shows, while NO TURN ON RED only bans it while the signal is red.
  • Left Turn Yield on Green: LEFT TURN YIELD ON GREEN tells left-turning drivers how to turn on a green ball; it says nothing about turning on red.
  • Stop Here on Red: STOP HERE ON RED shows where to stop on red; NO TURN ON RED means you must stay stopped until the signal turns green.
