Stop Here on Red sign

Shows where vehicles must stop when the traffic signal is red, used where drivers often stop past the line or the stopping point is not obvious.

What to do

When the light is red, stop behind the stop line the sign points to.

When the signal is red, stop behind the line the arrow points to, even if it is farther back than you would normally stop.

Also covered in Section 8B.10 for grade crossings.

Where it's used

Section 2B.59 lists STOP HERE ON RED (R10-6 or R10-6a) among the traffic signal signs used to clarify signal control and to make drivers observe the stop line. It is a vertical black-on-white sign with an arrow pointing toward the stop line, and Section 8B.10 covers its use at signalized grade crossings. It is mainly used where drivers tend to stop beyond the line or where the stopping point is not obvious.

Don't confuse it with

  • Stop Here When Flashing: STOP HERE WHEN FLASHING is used at grade crossings with flashing-light signals, while STOP HERE ON RED applies to a traffic signal's red indication.
  • Stop Line: The stop line is the painted white bar; this sign points to it so you know to stop there on red.
  • Stop: A STOP sign requires a stop every time, while this sign only applies when the signal shows red.
