Stop Line sign

A solid white line across the lane showing where vehicles must stop for a STOP sign, traffic signal or Stop Here for Pedestrians sign. It is 12 to 24 inches wide.

What to do

Stop behind the stop line.

Stop with your front bumper behind the line, then creep forward to look if your view is blocked.

Where it's used

Section 3B.19 allows stop lines to show where vehicles must stop for a STOP sign, Stop Here for Pedestrians sign or other stop control, and says they should be used at traffic signals; they must be solid white lines across the approach lanes and should be 12 to 24 inches wide. They may not be used where drivers only have to yield (except at some grade crossings). They should be at least 4 feet before the nearest crosswalk line, or where there is no crosswalk, between 4 and 30 feet from the edge of the cross street.

Don't confuse it with

  • Yield Line: A yield line is a row of white triangles where you yield and stop only if needed, while a stop line is a solid bar where you must stop.
  • Crosswalk Markings: Crosswalk lines mark where pedestrians cross; the stop line is before them so you do not block the crosswalk.
  • Stop Here on Red: STOP HERE ON RED is a sign pointing to the stop line at a signal.
