Railroad Crossing Pavement Marking (RR) sign

A large X with the letters RR, plus a no-passing marking and transverse lines, painted in each approach lane before many rail crossings.

What to do

Slow down, look and listen for trains, and do not pass.

When you drive over the RXR marking, slow down, do not pass, and be ready to stop before the tracks.

Where it's used

Section 8C.02 says grade crossing pavement markings consist of a large X, the letters RR, a no-passing zone marking on two-lane roads with center lines, and certain transverse lines, all in retroreflective white. They are required in each approach lane on paved roads leading to crossings with signals or gates and at other crossings where the speed is 40 mph or higher, although a diagnostic team may waive them on slower or urban roads. On multi-lane approaches identical markings go in each lane.

Don't confuse it with

  • Railroad Crossing Ahead: The round yellow sign is the post-mounted advance warning, while the RXR marking is painted on the pavement.
  • Railroad Crossing (Crossbuck): The Crossbuck sign stands at the crossing itself, while the pavement marking is on the approach.
  • Stop Line: The stop line at a crossing shows where to stop; the RXR symbol only warns that the crossing is ahead.
